Guard Goes to Ottawa, B-Sens Sign Cacciola
November 9, 2006
Binghamton signed David Cacciola to a 25 game PTO today to backup Jeff Glass while Kelly Guard is called up to Ottawa.
Cacciola, a native of Burlington, Massachusetts, attended the Binghamton Senators 2006-07 training camp
The 23-year-old posted a 18-5-4 (W-L-T) record in 28 games played with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in 2005-06. He finished the season with a .926 save percentage and 2.54 goals-against-average while also collecting two shutouts.
Kelly Guard was called up to when Ray Emery injured his wrist in practice. Originally thought to be serious, the Senators now feel it is a minor sprain.
Murray admitted he originally believed the injury was worse.
“We thought when he first hurt it, it was a fairly serious sprain that would keep him out a couple of weeks. Hopefully, it’s less than that.
“He feels a lot better. At this point in time, he’s just going to need a little bit of time to recover.”
I also heard that Emery was going to get an MRI just to verify there is no further damage. Let’s hope he will return soon. For this weekend expect Jeff Glass to carry the load in Binghamton, most likely starting in both games. Things will be more interesting in Ottawa where Gerber was slightly hurt in a 5-4 loss to Atlanta last night. With back-to-back games coming this weekend I have to wonder if they’ll give Guard a start. With how poorly Gerber played against Atlanta I don’t think that Guard would be any more of a liability.
Emery Hurt - Guard Called Up
November 8, 2006
Ray Emery injured his wrist in practice yesterday.
Ottawa Senators’ goalie Ray Emery suffered an injury in practice today - believed to be a wrist injury on his glove side - and sources say he is likely to be sidelined because of it.
Sources say the Senators are awaiting the medical prognosis on how long Emery will be out, but sources told TSN that it is a ‘potentially serious’ injury and Emery could be ‘out awhile.’
Although the Senators say that Emery may still play the back-up roll tomorrow night against the Atlanta Thrashers, the club has recalled goaltender Kelly Guard from the AHL’s Binghamton Senators on an emergency basis. He will dress in the event Emery cannot.
This comes at a bad time for both clubs who have each lost 3 straight. While Ottawa will now be forced to stick with their #1 goalie, Binghamton will have to rely on AHL rookie Jeff Glass who has struggled to start the season. No word on who will be called up to backup Glass in Binghamton. We should know more after Emery’s wrist is examined and the extent of the injury is known.
Weekly Crosscheck Vol. 2, #6
November 6, 2006
Hi Everybody! Winnipeg Johnny here, back from a road trip. Thanks to Pucknut for filling in the last couple of weeks!
Lets take a quick look back at last week and Pucknuts predictions.
Pucknuts vs Spankers: Prediction - Pucknuts win. Reality - Pucknuts win big and continue their rocket ride out of the basment.
Ice Bats vs Take Off Eh: Prediction - Ice Bats win. Reality - Ice Bats win, setting a new PIM record in the process.
Sublimators vs Monks: Prediction - Sublimators win. Reality - Alhough it was close in most categories, the Monks turned their game around and won.
5 For Fighting vs A-Team: Prediction - A-Team win. Reaity - A 5-5 draw! Pucknut said it would be close, so I’ll give him credit.
Saberswinthecup! vs SenStanley: Prediction - Saberswinthecup! win. Reality - SenStanley actually showed up, adjusted the lines and killed Saberswinthecup!.
Spezztacular vs Camo: Prediction - Camo win. Reality - Camo crushes Spezztacular. (Pucknut thought this would be close).
Good job Pucknut. 4 for 6, and nobody would have predicted the SenStanley win.
Camo increases the league lead and the Ice Bats are way out in front in the Southern Division, but The Pucknuts are making a charge and A-Team is hanging in. So what’s up for this week?
Week 6 Matchup
Ice Bats vs. Spankers
The Spankers are down, but not out. Still a strong team. The Ice Bats will win, but not by much.
5 For Fighting vs. Pucknuts
5 For Fighting doesn’t stand a chance. Pucknut will score big, and possibly take over first place in the south.
Take Off Eh vs. Sublimators
Well well well… finally the brother/sister matchup. I wouldn’t want to be in the middle of this one. The Sublimators will try hard, but I predict that Take Off Eh will pull way ahead by Saturday and take the win easily.
Camo vs. Monks
The Monks have moved their line up around and Camo has been idle, but I don’t think any of us will be beating Camo soon. Good luck Billy!
Saberswinthecup vs. A-Team!
The A-Team will continue to do well. They will win, but not with enough points to stay ahead of The Pucknuts.
Spezztacular vs. SenStanley!
Spezztacular has been falling slowly and SenStanley has turned the team around. This will be close, but SenStanley will take it. Look for them to overtake Saberswinthecup!
Those of you in the USA, don’t forget to vote on Tuesday. Please check to see if any of the candidates on your ballot support maximum sentences for game altering miss-calls.
Yeah Mick McGeough, I’m talkin’ ’bout you.

That is all.

B-Sens Find Replacement for Kaigorodov
November 3, 2006
He was spotted in training camp on the 31st.
AWOL
November 3, 2006
Bad news...Kaigorodov hasn’t reported to Binghamton yet. Somehow I think that Muckler expected this. Muckler made no public statement yesterday and the move was announced at the end of business hours so no one in the organization was available for comment. Now his first public address on the Kaigorodov is that he hasn’t reported. Muckler met with his agent before announcing this move so I think he knew Kaigorodov would split. Now the question is what the Senators will do about it.
Kaigorodov to start tonight?
November 3, 2006
There are conflicting reports over Kaigorodov being in the lineup tonight. The Press & Sun reports:
As of late Wednesday evening, no timetable for Kaigorodov’s arrival had been made public, though B-Sens officials said it was unlikely the 2002 second-round draft pick would be in the lineup when Binghamton hosts Bridgeport at 7:05 tonight.
But the Ottawa Sun is reporting:
While he might be in for a culture shock riding the buses, Kaigorodov, 23, was assigned to the AHL’s Binghamton Senators yesterday and he’s scheduled to make his debut tonight against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
…There was some belief the Senators might send Kaigorodov, 23, back to his Russian club, Magnitogorsk, but it’s believed the team decided on the AHL after a discussion with Kaigorodov’s agent Anton Thun.
I’m optimistic he will be here tonight and get a warm reception from the sold out crowd. Looking at the B-Sens roster we could really use a #1 center with his ability. Vesce is talented, but small and Serge Payer is more of a 3rd line guy, not a scorer. People keep talking about the culture shock and isolation Kaigorodov might experience in Binghamton, but the hardest part might be the schedule. After weeks of getting at most 4 minutes of ice time he is getting thrown into a busy 3 games in a nights weekend.
Kaigorodov Headed to Binghamton!
November 2, 2006
It is finally official after much rumor and speculation. Alexei Kaigorodov was assigned to Binghamton today and will most likely dress for Fridays home game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Kaigorodov has had trouble adjusting to the North American game and has seen minimal ice time. There had been rumors he would return to Russia rather than report to Binghamton, but GM John Muckler had said that was not true. My guess is that there was some truth, but Muckler worked something out with the agent, perhaps promising Kaigorodov would be recalled before the end of the year.
The talented center should see much greater ice time in Binghamton and get a chance to play on the power play with more talented scored than McGratton and Schubert who were his linemates in Ottawa. Binghamton has been struggling offensively and Kaigorodov could be the shot in the arm they need. I look forward to reporting on his debut after Fridays game.
Home Again
November 2, 2006
The B-Sens first road trip is over and they play Bridgeport tomorrow night. I was hoping the team would find some chemistry on the road and come back as one cohesive unit. Well, that was a nice thought, but there is still work to be done. So far this season the Sens have been battling for consistency. What works for them one game fails the next.
The good news is that most losses have been by one goal and all the pieces of the team are doing well. The offense is scoring, the defense is much better than last year, Kelly Guard has been sharp in net and penalties are way down. Now they just need to put it all together for 60 minutes.
Tickets for tomorrows game are soldout so I’m looking forward to a raucous arena when the Sens take the ice against Bridgeport. No word whether Billy Thompson will be in the pipes. Players to watch:
Bobby Robins - After a great start I haven’t seen his name in the game reports from the road trip. Is the tough AHL season getting to him already?
Andrew Ebbets - The rookie is now leading the team in scoring. Flash in the pan or real deal?
Josh Hennessy - Has finally found his scoring touch. Looking forward to seeing what he can do.
Jeff Heerema - After a hot start seems to be cooling off. Can he replace Denis Hamel?
Kelly Guard - Performing admirably. Does the AHL sophmore have what it takes to carry a team?
Serge Payer and Corey Pecker - Former B-Sens standouts are MIA. Where is there game?
Michal Barinka - 6′ 3″ 225? Lets see him throw the body a bit more and clear the crease.
